base material

The Grace Blue base material has arrived. DuraSurf™ 4001Sintered Running Surface
A higher molecular weight version of the standard product, DuraSurf 4001 takes an already industry-best durability to an even greater level. Without a doubt the toughest material on the hill. Steel for the press arrives tomorrow...things are getting close around here. Designs are done, materials are ordered. Well almost, need top sheets and side walls..lets get that done this week. The carbon is in the mail! 4.1 OZ and 9 OZ uni carbon for stringers! Can you feel it? We can. Also contacted Marker for 5 pair of Jester 16 Demo Bindings. As I type this i am reminded not everyone is 195 LBS better get some 12s for you lighter folks!
great day in the kitchen!

Tighten your DIN

The snow started to fall and the base is accumulating. We can all look forward to a ski season full of snow, exhilaration and the dream of tightening our respective DINs. Tighten your DIN, that is a phrase we can feel righteous about moving forward. There was a free skiing competitor by the name of, well it wont come to me. He was from Taos, carpenter by summer, broke both his ankles one year, skied in a few Warren Miller movies etc etc..what was his name?? Someone? Anyway, he stood amongst the rabid skiers in 1999 in Whistler delivering this advice to us up top. "Tighten your screws". I personally didn't let his advice register, lost both my skies in a 40 foot tumble. What he was trying to tell us was to "Tighten our DIN"... on our bindings. Competition tenses up everything, thus the bindings need to hold a little extra tight! The other DIN setting is in ones head. DIN is noise, bothersome hindering noise, that reverberates and fills our heads. We ask you to Tighten or squelch that noise when you go skiing, or all the time for that matter. Keep the noise out, leave the phone at home, log into your Epic Mix when you get to the couch, enjoy the silence while on the snow...keep tightening your DIN.

Business cards

Pick up a few business cards today. Does this make it official? We placed a QR code on the back to take you right here. It will eventually take one to the web site. Ahh the web site, that is on the list.

Prototype top sheets for 2010-2011

The prototype skis for 2010-2011 will be laminated with a clear top sheet. No we are not going the route of "transparency", we will leave that for the 2010 office culture catch phrase award shows. What a clear top sheet does allow is access to mistakes. If the core shifts, carbon wraps or air accumulates in the construction process we need to know. So the clear top sheets will be standard for 2010-2011. Graphics will have to wait. (and we love graphics)

Epic Mix

We think this is an interesting way to create more sharing. The Epic Mix sponsored by our close friends at Vail Resorts. We figure it will let Grace Skiers know where everyone else is..then don't go there. For the masses that are more interested in sharing instead of skiing it is a wonderful tool. Don't get us wrong, building community around skiing is awesome. In the 70 and 80's it was done with skiing then drinking. In the 80-90's it was done in courtrooms. From our stand point we wouldn't mind seeing those pics and videos from 1980. Any who..We will get the Epic Mix and see what happens, We wonder who that Crazy character will be that wins the award for riding every lift at every resort first..I doubt "that guy" will be on Grace Skis..ever.

Seth Godin's Blog today

Seth Godin's blog
Deliberately uninformed, relentlessly so [a rant] Many people in the United States purchase one or fewer books every year. Many of those people have seen every single episode of American Idol. There is clearly a correlation here.Access to knowledge, for the first time in history, is largely unimpeded for the middle class. Without effort or expense, it's possible to become informed if you choose. For less than your cable TV bill, you can buy and read an important book every week. Share the buying with six friends and it costs far less than coffee.Or you can watch TV.The thing is, watching TV has its benefits. It excuses you from the responsibility of having an informed opinion about things that matter. It gives you shallow opinions or false 'facts' that you can easily parrot to others that watch what you watch. It rarely unsettles our carefully self-induced calm and isolation from the world.I got a note from someone the other day, in which she made it clear that she doesn't read non-fiction books or blogs related to her industry. And she seemed proud of this.I was roped into an argument with someone who was sure that ear candling was a useful treatment. Had he read any medical articles on the topic? No. But he knew. Or said he did.You see a lot of ostensibly smart people in airports, and it always surprises me how few of them use this downtime to actually become more informed. It's clearly a deliberate act--in our infoculture, it takes work not to expose yourself to interesting ideas, facts, news and points of view. Hal Varian at Google reports that the average person online spends seventy seconds a day reading online news. Ouch. Not all books are correct or useful. Not all accepted science is correct. The conventional wisdom might just be wrong. But ignoring all of it because the truth is now fashionably situational and in the eye of the beholder is a lame alternative.I know this rant is nothing new. In fact, people have been complaining about widespread willful ignorance since Brutus or Caesar or whoever invented the salad... the difference now is this: more people than ever are creators. More people than ever go to work to use their minds, not just their hands. And more people than ever have a platform to share their point of view. I think that raises the bar for our understanding of how the world works.Let's assert for the moment that you get paid to create, manipulate or spread ideas. That you don't get paid to lift bricks or hammer steel. If you're in the idea business, what's going to improve your career, get you a better job, more respect or a happier day? Forgive me for suggesting (to those not curious enough to read this blog and others) that it might be reading blogs, books or even watching TED talks. As for the deliberately uninformed, we can ignore them or we can reach out to them and hopefully start a pattern of people thinking for themselves...

KGB Productions

Jackson-based KGB Productions today released their second episode of “Wyoming Triumph.” The series was filmed last winter throughout the state from the “cattle ranch to the backcountry” and highlights the unique characters and remote locations only found in the state with a cowboy on it’s license plate. This video features Trevor Hiatt, Rob Lapper, Matt Luczkow, and one pair of skis that broke in half.

A great day...

Substantial snowfall can disrupt public infrastructure and services, slowing human activity even in regions that are accustomed to such weather. Air and ground transport may be greatly inhibited or shut down entirely. Basic utilities such as electricity, phone lines and gas lines can also fail. In addition, snow can make roads much harder to travel and vehicles attempting to use them can easily become stuck. The combined effects can lead to a "snow day" on which gatherings such as school, work, or church are officially canceled.

lets stay positive my friends!

Entropy Resins

We ordered our epoxy choice today. We feel it is the best overall choice for a wet lay-up lamination, cure time and settling back into the environment. From an environmental perspective, what makes Entropy bio-epoxy better than other epoxy systems? At the end of the day this comes down to carbon footprint. By replacing petrochemicals with bio-mass we reduce the amount of carbon that is reintroduced into our environment from petrochemical processing. The processes used to refine and manufacture our bio-derived materials require less energy, water, and output less greenhouse gases than conventional petrochemical processing. Furthermore by sourcing our bio-mass from the waste stream or as a co-product from other industrial processes, we are able to further reduce the carbon footprint impact due to processing. We like this kind of thinking. The crew at Entropy Resins also realize that if it doesn’t work, who cares what it is made from. So we at Grace will put it to the test.

Quick FYI, the SS1300 system is now the SS1310 system, same product just a different name

UV Printing...

UV VS OTHER PRINTING METHODS

One of the biggest advantages of UV printing is that there are fewer emissions of volatile organic compounds into the environment since there is no evaporation of the solvents
like with conventional inks. Another advantage of UV printing is that the inks can dry on plastic and other non-porous substrates. Now, doesn't this seem like a nice way to print a top sheet?

Thanks to the crew over at Great Big Color for the info. We will be touring their plant next week to check out the top sheet printing possibilities.

Business thought

Some industries (My example: Surley at REI, the call will ruin their brand) believe that they best serve their audience when the product is available everywhere. It's pretty rare to find a book that's only available in one chain of bookstores, or a pain reliever that's only in one sort of drugstore.
The thing is, scarcity creates value. You can't get a Pepsi at McDonald's. You can't buy Hermes at Target. By limiting choice, you can create value. Exclusivity is often underrated.

The Winterlife

The Winterlife.. follow it..

The folks over at FlyLow have the right frame of mind. As we follow in their respective footsteps, we have to respect every step. We can all learn from this, especially not to forget the belt with the bottle opener. We at grace Skis hope to create a relationship with the Colorado company..we like their style. I personally love their gloves...simple, warm, inexpensive and have lasted 2 seasons..go buy some.

Enjoyable State of Being

Good old solid skiing....check it
