Grace Kylie Concepts

As I sat here with a 100 degree temperature, with my hood up, I came up with a few graphics for the production Kylie 2011-2012. The prototype models 2010-2011 will have a clear top sheet to see imperfections. The colors are consistent with the branding. If you have any comments let me know. If you can see your self standing above a pair of these, ready to tip it into a DIN tightening run, that would be perfect.

Day 003

Kate and I spent a morning turning them at Keystone. Day 003 was not very comfortable due to Day 002. We managed to make it through my blisters and ever present 99.7 fever. tell you the truth I about passed out at the bottom of the outback. lets pass over my problems and move into Kates advancements. We learned a few things.

Kate is essentially a beginner skier. 5-6 days last season with a heavy devotion going into 2010-2011. I personally cant wait to make her a pair of skis. A pair of skis that scream at the establishment and advance her into the realm of "more fun". We had a miscue and forgot her K2 "whatever luvs". The "whatever luvs" are an ok ski. They got her through 5-6 days and she is way past them. Does the industry sell "Kates" these skis so they will sell more skis? I would think so. If i cut them in half, i would find some poplar, some triaxial fiberglass and some base material. All low grade, cheap and just right to make a simple, low end ski. We got her a wider more "performance" ski. Well, at least wider, I figure around 95mm from the look of them and it had a little metal, titanium is my guess. I am sure they have a lightweight core as it is a "female specific ski". Long story short Kate did much better delivering power to the edges, busting through crud, and her speed increased. The issue is, her DIN needed to tighten, not the one in her head, just her bindings.
Long story short
Never compromise on a ski purchase. A ski will never allow Joe blow to ski like Harkin Banks (sorry had to do it) but we would recommend that if you have potential in you, don't ever let that potential be relegated in the "whatever luv" because it was 30$ cheaper or "some dude ski shop guy" said this one is the best for "Kates".

Day 002

We took a quick run up to Berthoud Pass on Friday for Day 002. As always my feet hurt, got huge blisters on my heals and hit a tree stump with my hip. My feet problems are always going to happen as I lug 120MM underfoot with a pair of Dukes, flipping Tecnica Diablos. When will I learn that Dynafit might have a product for me? One would think I would grab my back county poles with some surface area on the baskets? I hope my credibility isn't shot. At very least my beacon had new batteries, good news for Amir and Steve.

The snow is better then average for mid to late November..Go have some fun.

Edge Bender

Here is a sketch of our prototypical edge bender. We are going to build this specifically for the Kylie 196. We will build up different radii of the cylinder for other ski sizes. We look forward to bending some edges, perfectly.

Ski Press Update

Can you feel it?

If you are going to work with steel , wear gloves. That isn't jelly. We put together a cart for the press today. The steel frame should be finished by Saturday afternoon, as we pick up a mag drill Friday! Add a cat track, heating blankets and a few finishing touches..she is "done"...

Smartwool Branding Is Off The Mark

I used to dig Smartwool. matter of fact I have a pair from 1997 that are worn through and I still wear them. They make (made) an outstanding sock as far as I am concerned. Since I am concerned I no longer think Smartwool is worth inserting my pinkie toe. I came across this ad in Powder on page 093 .(Don't hold it against Powder Mag, they need to pay the bills) If you know me I can be a bit critical, in this case I am just going to point out a few things and let you place those observations on the cool or not scale. You are free to make up your own matrix..

Here is some choice text from the ad:
1. Telemark Skiers, aka "Cookie and Shaggy" (my score is a 5, you can figure out my scale I am sure)
2. It puts distance between you and your next goose bump. (5)
3. Out here, not every goose bump is from the cold. (5)
Thoughts on the photo:
1. Wow Shaggy can really smile (5+1)
2. Where are their beacons? (4)
3. Backpacks? (4)
4. Does Cookie or Shaggy make millions? Does every excursion deserves brand new everything? (5)
I have advice for Smartwool, take that ad and put it in 5280 or Esquire or burn it. When skiers read into this kind of representation they end up seeing through Cookie and Shaggy. I bet Shaggy can really drop a knee and nobody cares if Cookie thinks she is a telemarker.
Hint: Chuck Norris would be a 1, Boy George scores a 5...you do the math.

arcteryx ALL I CAN

http://arcteryx.com/?EN

Sherpas Cinema are taking a completely different approach to ski and environmental documentary filmmaking. By taking an honest look at the real mountain individual in the context of their environment, "All.I.Can" aims to find a balance between our passions for the outdoors and an inspiration for green and long-term thinking.

New Shop and steel

One 6 yard dumpster full of debris, massive amounts of horse hair plaster that sucks moisture from skin like a desert plant in the sand, the shop is taking form. With a few additions like a 220 (221 whatever it takes) we are up and running. The back of 3819 was a kitchen. Not a very nice kitchen to most standards, but a kitchen. With limited funds we make decisions that represent overhead that doesn't drown our ambitions. We learned this process from previous work places. Establishments that could not be flexible or let their egos be tarnished with reasonable finishes. This "Kitchen" will be the perfect ski manufacturing shop, south facing window, bathroom and back door to the outside. The office space/bed room on the second floor enjoys plant life, Bose speakers and an East facing window! Best of all, no commute.

We may not have walnut adorned walls or Dorn Bracht faucets (actually we do, 15$ from Buds a $2,000 value) we replace those with callouses, dust, low overhead and flexibility!

We build the press this week! Here are the raw materials. One Magnetic drill press and some 3/4" bolts away from 150,000 pounds of pressure! We dig this... especially building the press to some new Monster Magnet and Black Angels...

Day 001

Kate, Fred and I made a quick run to A-Basin today for day 001. The sun was out, no clouds to speak of. This is good and bad of course. Come July we hope that 001 flip flops and the 1(00) is first...
Kate is back from a skiing hiatus of too many years. When she gets on a pair of Grace Skis here life will change...I promise.

small but quick..Moment Skis

we were small, but we were slow...does not apply here!

Big Day

The steel is being delivered today, we received our carbon fiber order. Things are looking up. We also attained our first tier three investor. GST30001. Not sure if that naming convention will stick but we also call him Len! Thank you Len. This liquidety will go directly to heating blankets for the press! So many good things happening! Back to work!
