KYLIE BMA 196 is in the press

We placed a Kylie 196 in the press today. First one was a treat. Going through the calculated motions was a needed process. We already have ideas as to how to streamline the process. We will pull them out in all their clear top sheet glory tomorrow morning. Mount them, finish them and ski on them Friday...

making skis

We came across a thread today. An individual asked about making skis. Here is one of the responses:

I think the tutorial goes something like this:

1) get a lot of money together

2) research the shit out of the specs

3) go thru a lot of pain lining up some manfacturing

4) go thru a rediculous amount of pain making a run or two on schedule

5) test the shit out of it, tweak design

6) repeat 4 and 5

7) ship some bad ass skis

8) stress all day and night over your commitments

9) repeat 4 thru 8.

I dunno. I give small companies two thumbs up for what they are doing, it sounds WAYYY to painful for a slacker like me ;)

This guy summed it up perfectly...

Priorities

At Grace Skis we usually use the pronoun "WE" in posts. This time it is going to be an "I". I screwed up the last few months by not following through with an important issue. You know how you feel this wonderful sense of relief and accomplishment when you finish a project that you are not really looking forward to doing. Something that needs to be done, but that is not very fun? Something that can be put off and off and off.
A few things come to mind----Changing the fluid in the rear differential. Tearing out the old carpet and putting in hard-wood flooring. Sending a letter to a friend. I didn't send a letter to a friend. This letter isn't an ordinary letter, it is a thank you letter of sorts. I didn't do it. I take full responsibility yet have no explanation as to why I didn't write it, sign it and send it. It came down to a poetic nudge from the letters recipient to make it happen this morning. It is sent, way to late for my conscience, but it is sent!

Long story short, I use the pronoun "We" for this very reason. No one gets through this life alone and without help. One never accomplishes anything without support from their respective past. There isn't an original thought. One might want credit for what other perceive as original thought. I was reminded today, "WE" is always the better pronoun. Unless of course "We" screw up, then it is "I". I screwed up.

Thanks Doug.

Press action: 3 steps forward 1 step back

Spent the day filling voids and pumping 60 psi in the press. NO fatal explosions! Matter of fact no noticeable deflections in the steel. We didn't even use the extra 2x2wrap, we will when we push 60psi for the real deal. We did have a blow out in the wood void. Not a problem, we thought that might happen. We fix that tomorrow. Took a big gouge out of a finger as well, lots of blood. No workers comp for this crew..

Tomorrow is a big day and we look forward to it.

Press

We pumped up the press today with perfect success. All we need is some bungees and things get a little simpler. A few finishing touches tomorrow as well as attempting to CNC a bamboo core from our 3d models. I think we will layup a mock ski this weekend and press away..

Major Progress

This is what one gets when they "design" in Auto Cad, export to Sketchup, create a 3D model import to Rhino and save as an STL. Open the STL in Visual Mill. Create G-code and savethen open in EMC2. Final results will be in tomorrow as this picture is just MDF.
We CNCed a core out of pine as well with the same file and bits, it is PERFECT. So tomorrow the bits will hit Bamboo and poplar for a Kylie 196 prototype!

We spent quality time learning the CNC software, but from here forward we can tweak any ski core in minutes and the tolerances are spot on. Rinse and repeat from here!!!

Proof we should make skis, we are INTP

Took a quick personality test this morning. All signs pont to us making skis to change the world!

INTPs live in the world of theoretical possibilities. They see everything in terms of how it could be improved, or what it could be turned into. They live primarily inside their own minds, having the ability to analyze difficult problems, identify patterns, and come up with logical explanations. They seek clarity in everything, and are therefore driven to build knowledge. They are the "absent-minded professors", who highly value intelligence and the ability to apply logic to theories to find solutions. They typically are so strongly driven to turn problems into logical explanations, that they live much of their lives within their own heads, and may not place as much importance or value on the external world. Their natural drive to turn theories into concrete understanding may turn into a feeling of personal responsibility to solve theoretical problems, and help society move towards a higher understanding. The INTP is at his best when he can work on his theories independently. When given an environment which supports his creative genius and possible eccentricity, the INTP can accomplish truly remarkable things. These are the pioneers of new thoughts in our society.
Here is a quick list of some INTP's...
Brain Griffin (Family Guy)
Sir Isaac Newton
Albert Einstein
Charles Darwin
